how to cast off
How I can remove my own distribution?

I fractured a metacarpal in the center of my hand (nearest the wrist) and had a cast with no real pain of the past four weeks. All but my index finger and thumb and the cast are going to elbow. At this stage, the distribution is rather unpleasant, so I take the cast off and wrapping it with an elastic bandage for the remaining weeks initially suggested by my physician. How I can do this and what are the potential risks?

Yes I broke my hand and had a cast for four days, I guess for 3 weeks .. I scissors took time but I think its the safest way … Good luck ………….. Feel Ur Hand

Before Dreamgirls hit cineplexes in 2006, there was Sparkle. Released in 1976, the low-budget movie (which is also loosely based on the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes) achieved somewhat of a cult following among fans that enjoy a good cry along with their kitsch. Sparkle tells the rags-to-riches (and rags again, for some of the characters) tale of three sisters with gorgeous voices. There’s …

Children's Letters to God (Original Off-Broadway Cast)

Children’s Letters to God (Original Off-Broadway Cast)

$14.38

“It reminded me of…Robin Hood!” Wait, wrong musical. But this musical, Children’s Letters to God, is like the one from which that line is taken, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Both are based on published works, written from a child’s viewpoint. Each song in both plays represents a different episode or situation in the kids’ lives. The songs in each are not complex, generally humorous (although not so to the characters, of course), and likeable. The one difference is that the stars of this musical are actually children. Their acting is, naturally, not entirely comfortable, but overall, they manage a creditable job. In “How Come?” each child is just as serious about smelly feet as he or she is about world peace. They do have that Andrea McArdle warbling singing style, however. Most of the songs begin with a recitation of letters to God, as they appeared in, or were inspired by, the book of the same name. The lyrics take off from there, carrying on with a cleverness that mimics a child’s seemingly random association between things and using the language of kids (words such as “dorkhead” and phrases such as “spray milk out of your nose”). Some of the situations are timeless (the death of a pet, wishing you were an only child), while others are strictly modern (do you need to choose between Kwanzaa, Chanukah, and Christmas). David Evans has not dumbed down the music to kid level, but rather, takes into account the unsophisticated nature of their skills. The kids actually do surprisingly well when it does occasionally break out into five-part harmony. Refreshingly, among all the other entertainment options for and about kids, this musical is entertaining because of what it is not: it’s not too cutesy, it doesn’t have that “awwww” factor, and it isn’t directed just at adults or just at kids. It’s an amiable, sincere, bemusing look at how kids think. ~ Patsy Morita, Rovi Performers: David Phillips – Bass (Acoustic), Bass (Electric); Rick Hackman – Reeds; Andrew Zutty – Vocals; Gerard Canonico – Vocals; Howard Joines – Drums, Percussion; Jimmy Dieffenbach – Vocals; Larry Pressgrove – Synthesizer, Piano; Libbie Jacobson – Vocals; Sara Kapner – Vocals

The second album from the collaboration of Stephen O’Malley and Peter Rehberg again shows that the duo knows how to create involved, dark atmospheres that benefit rather than suffer from length. “Game” starts off very quietly, builds and then swerves — it is not a constant drone but an evolutionary one, not tied to overt rhythm or cycles, but to deft touching down here and there. There’s a sense of improvisation, of testing out approaches, feeling one’s way forward. “Theme” does bring in rhythm, a hidden muffled dreambeat, and very carefully builds up and up. It’s a near-endless creepiness that, indeed, creeps — by the five-minute mark the shimmering, tortured electronics suggest something between Ligeti and Bernard Herrmann, floating ominously above a pit while waiting to cast a listener down into it. When it breaks into a swirling rise-and-fall collage before the tenth minute, that’s the start of the core of the piece, a true theme as a core melody emerges from the trebly murk in a way that combines aggressive in-the-red levels with calm serenity in beautiful fashion — less Sunn 0))), say, than mid-period Flying Saucer Attack with a technological edge. “Abattoir” in its focused, grinding intensity does suggest that a whirling buzzsaw of noise is about to eviscerate the listener very messily — when it cuts off almost ten minutes in to a lower, groaning howl, the respite is welcome but only temporary in the end as everything first returns to a greater intensity, and slowly ebbs away from there. “Snow 2″ ends it all on an appropriately chilling note, echoed rattling over a drifting calm, with a soft post-Cocteau Twins guitar figure adding a surprising gentleness. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi

When they were in Thee Shams, Andy Gabbard and Zach Gabbard played music that was firmly rooted in the sounds of the mid-’60s, but with their third album, their band Buffalo Killers has moved bravely into the early ’70s, and they sound right at home there. Buffalo Killers 3 suggests a meeting of the minds between Crazy Horse and the James Gang during a few mellow days in Laurel Canyon, and if you didn’t read the credits or look at the copyright date, many listeners would never guess this music was recorded in the 21st century. While there isn’t much here that suggests a shameless rip-off of any artist in particular, 3 conjures up a sense of time and place with ease, and the loose, sun-burnt vibe of this music, fused with Andy’s fluid but forceful guitar work, Zach’s simple but effective basslines, and Joey Sebaali’s colorful percussion work drifts between country-rock and hard rock in a way that suggests the strengths of both without hitching itself to either. Lyrically, the Killers don’t have a whole lot to say, but the melodies are fine stuff and the band plays with a seasoned air of musical intuition, knowing where to fill the spaces and how to make the most of their power trio format. Joining the Killers on their journey through the past are Kelley Deal, Brian Olive, and James Leg, but even if this is a very Ohio-centric cast of characters, this music has a rich West Coast feel, and in this case, that’s a good thing. Buffalo Killers 3 finds this band easing into an comfortable but deep groove, and not many bands have mined a late hippie-era approach with more satisfying results. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

American Graffiti [2 Discs] [Includes Digital Copy] [Blu-ray/DVD]

$19.98

It’s the last night of summer 1962, and the teenagers of Modesto, California, want to have some fun before adult responsibilities close in. Among them are Steve (Ron Howard) and Curt (Richard Dreyfuss), college-bound with mixed feelings about leaving home; nerdy Terry “The Toad” (Charles Martin Smith), who scores a dream date with blonde Debbie (Candy Clark); and John (Paul Le Mat ), a 22-year-old drag racer who wonders how much longer he can stay champion and how he got stuck with 13-year-old Carol (Mackenzie Phillips) in his deuce coupe. As D. J. Wolfman Jack spins 41 vintage tunes on the radio throughout the night, Steve ponders a future with girlfriend Laurie (Cindy Williams), Curt chases a mystery blonde, Terry tries to act cool, and Paul prepares for a race against Bob Falfa (Harrison Ford), but nothing can stop the next day from coming, and with it the vastly different future ushered in by the 1960s. Fresh off The Godfather (1972), producer Francis Ford Coppola had the clout to get his friend George Lucas’s project made, but only for $750,000 on a 28-day shooting schedule. Despite technical obstacles, and having to shoot at night, cinematographer Haskell Wexler gave the film the neon-lit aura that Lucas wanted, evoking the authentic look of a suburban strip to go with the authentic sound of rock-n-roll. Universal, which wanted to call the film Another Slow Night in Modesto, thought it was unreleasable. But Lucas’ period detail, co-writers Willard Huyck’s and Gloria Katz’s realistic dialogue, and the film’s nostalgia for the pre-Vietnam years apparently appealed to a 1973 audience embroiled in cultural chaos: American Graffiti became the third most popular movie of 1973 (after The Exorcist and The Sting), establishing the reputations of Lucas (whose next film would be Star Wars) and his young cast, and furthering the onset of soundtrack-driven, youth-oriented movies. Although the film helped spark 1970s nostalgia for the 1950s, nothing else would capture …

 Carbeth

Carbeth

$18.99

Beauty rarely hides where you expect it. Take, for instance, the debut release by the U.K.’s Trembling Bells. It starts off as a fine neo-folk record, the kind that upholds the tradition of British folk music, updating it along the way, in this particular case with elements of alternative psychedelic rock. An aerial female singer (Lavinia Blackwall of Directing Hand), a male singer with more of a layman’s voice (Alex Neilson, also the band’s drummer and mastermind), and very competent musicians around them. The music first oscillates between psychedelic folk (“I Listed All of the Velvet Lessons”) and alt-country (“I Took to You (Like Christ to Wood”), the mocking tone of the latter reinforced by a peculiar strand of humor found again in “The End Is the Beginning Born Knowing” and “Your Head Is the House of Your Tongue.” And then comes “Willows of Carbeth,” a gripping, emotional song in the folk-rock vein, as moving as Fairport Convention’s very best moments. And that’s where beauty hits you unexpectedly: the bright light cast by that single song inundates the rest of the album, which you can’t help but see anew — the feeling, the originality hiding behind the familiar, the high level of cohesion of the group. And that’s how you realize that this band do more than just knowing what they’re doing: they have the Fire. The Folk Fire. The one that will make a band sound genuine whether they tackle dirges or drinking songs. And that’s how Carbeth becomes an album to cherish. Do yourself a favor: let yourself be caught off-guard. ~ Fran? ois Couture, Rovi

 David Carlson: Anna Karenina

David Carlson: Anna Karenina

$41.98

Anna Karenina, David Carlson’s third opera, and the first to be professionally recorded, shows he is a natural composer of large-scale romantic grand opera; he has mastered the elusive art of giving the broad structure a musical coherence and logic. The through-composed opera is essentially post-Romantic in style, and the orchestration is especially inventive and varied. Carlson gratefully writes for the voice and knows how to show off his singers, but he sometimes falls into clich? d melodic patterns, lyrical, but more conventional than inspired. He does create believable, sympathetic characters, and in this he’s hugely aided by Colin Graham’s libretto, which manages to capture the essence of Tolstoy’s sprawling original, distilling it while retaining enough particulars to give the narrative and the characters a rich and emotionally realistic texture, often a problem in operas derived from novels. The opera was commissioned by Florida Grand Opera and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and this recording is taken from the Saint Louis staging in 2007. The last cast capably handles the opera, singing and acting with conviction, bringing the complex characters to life. Kelly Kaduce in the title role, Brandon Jovanovich, and Robert Gierlach stand out it particular. Stewart Robertson conducts the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra with a lyric sweep and a strong sense of drama. Signum’s sound is open and spacious, and the balance is generally good, although it occasionally favors the orchestra. There is some stage and audience noise, but not enough to be distracting. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi
